How Industries are addressing LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) of Environmental Impacts

Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a method to quantitatively evaluate the environmental impact of a product or service over its entire life cycle: resource extraction, raw material production, product production, distribution, consumption and disposal or recycling.

Corporate Sustainability Goals are expected to drive more companies to focus on full LCA for their products and services

How are various industries addressing LCA today?

To answer this question we asked Open Innovation Council (OI Council), NineSigma’s network of technology professionals who are driving the innovation around the world, how they are addressing LCA.

The results were rather surprising:

  • The Electronics industry is the most advanced. Nearly 80% of OIC electronics industry experts have ongoing LCA initiatives
  • In contrast the Machinery and Heavy Equipment industry was the least committed with only 20% of respondents saying they were actively working on LCA.
  • The industries where our OIC experts thought LCA will become a major issue were:
  1. Construction
  2. Chemicals and Materials
  3. Electronics
  • It is interesting that although the Construction and Chemicals and Materials industries thought LCA would be a major issue they were much less active in this area than the Electronics industry.
  • Asia was the most committed to LCA initiatives with America second and Europe lagging behind in third place.

We asked OIC experts to describe the practical effects LCA will have on the:

  • Electronics
  • Construction
  • Chemicals and Materials
  • Automotive

If you want to learn what companies in these sectors are doing about LCA and what technologies they expect to be important in the future we would be happy to send you the results of the full survey.
