RFP Title

Microencapsulation technologies for hair-care ingredients
RFP Description

NineSigma, representing a leading manufacturer with sales of ten billion dollars, seeks microencapsulation technologies capable of extended release of hair-care ingredients. The Client look forward to a wide-range of proposals used in different fields such as DDS technology of pharmaceutical products and foods in addition to technologies that are already being applied to hair-care ingredients. They would like to select promising materials through sample tests.

Background

The Client is a leading manufacturer thinking of encapsulating hair-care ingredients in microcapsules capable of extended release to better sustain the effects of the ingredients.

The Client has been investigating techniques using different materials, but encountered problems: for instance, one having no extended release effects while another having extended release effects but deteriorated hair appearance and texture when touched.

On the other hand, such microencapsulation technologies of effective ingredients are widely used in other areas such as pharmaceutical products and foods, which led to an idea that some technologies developed in other areas may be applicable to the requirements of the Client, and subsequently to the decision to invite proposals this time.

Key Success Criteria

Requirements for microencapsulation

  • Capable of maintaining hair-care ingredients in the following ways. These are merely potential ideas as of this point, and variations may increase according to considerations made in the future.
    • Oily ingredients such as camellia oil
    • Water-in-oil (W/O) emulsion
  • After adhering to hair, capable of gradually releasing hair-care ingredients by one of the following triggers.
    • Capsules break when hair is combed by hand to gradual release ingredients.
      • Capsulation strength (indication): 0.8 MPa
    • Capsules in air slowly break to gradually release the ingredients.
      • Extended release time: 12 hours
  • After adhering to the hair, capsules should not be a size that affects appearance and texture when touched.
    • Capsule diameter (indication): ≤20 μm

If there is possibility that the above requirements may be met in the future, the shell material and thickness of the capsules can be anything.

Anticipated Organizations

  • Organizations with track record in applications for the hair-care ingredients targeted by the Sponsor.
  • Organizations possessing technologies used in different areas such as pharmaceutical products and foods (for instance the following), and technologies considered to have the potential to be applied to requirements sought in the above.
    • Chitosan
    • Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose
    • Other
Approaches not of Interest

The following approaches are not of interest:

Currently concept level technologies, for which sample tests are difficult.

Preferred Collaboration Types
Items to be Submitted

Please include the following items as clearly as possible in your proposal:

  • Outline, principle, uniqueness of proposed technologies
  • Development stage (Performance verified at a lab level / Under development for practical use / Implemented for practical use)
  • Current performance
    • Capsule material
    • Capsule size
      • Particle size
      • Thickness of shell
    • Ingredients to be encapsulated
    • Capsule strength (if available)
    • Trigger for extended release (e.g., pressure, pH, temperature, changes with time)
    • Data on extended release (e.g., effects sustained time)
    • Current applications
  • Sample test conditions (e.g., amount, costs, time, if NDA is required)
  • Challenges for the requirements of the Client, development plans, and development costs
  • Past achievements (e.g., additional information indicating R&D ability such as papers and patents)

Please submit your proposal via NineSights, the platform of NineSigma’s Open Innovation community, which allows you to manage all your proposals. Please contact the Solution Provider Help Desk phd2@ninesigma.com for assistance about registration and proposal submission.

Notes on Response

Proposal shall have clear points and should not include confidential information. Supplemental files may be submitted in addition to the proposal.

Anticipated Project Process

After the submission due date, the client will review all submitted proposals. NineSigma will send the review results to each proposer 6-8 weeks after the due date. The client possibly asks clarifying questions before selecting the most suitable candidates for collaboration. The client will select best candidates through evaluations. During the selection process, the client may execute NDA with selected respondents, seek further information disclosure, and discuss specific development targets or potential opportunities.

The client will execute necessary agreements with the selected respondents and move to the advanced development phase. Specifics of any collaboration will be determined through consultation with the concerned parties.

Response evaluation

The client will evaluate all responses with the following criteria.

  • Overall scientific and technical merit
  • Approach to proof of concept or performance
  • Economic potential of concept
  • Realism of the proposed plan (action items, timeline, roles, deliverables, cost estimation)
  • Potential for proprietary position
