RFP Title

Real-Time Molten Steel Analysis
RFP Description

NineSigma, representing a global metal engineering company, invites proposals for a novel, top-down real-time analysis of molten steel in a metallurgical reactor.

Background

In metallurgical reactors, the temperature and composition of molten steel is measured to determine the optimum conditions for further processing. Typically this measurement is via a thermocouple lance and is manually operated. A sample is taken, analysed, and then a decision is taken. This process is time-consuming and involves potentially hazardous steps.

Recent advancements using LIBS technology (Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy) has enabled the critical parameters to be measured in real time. However, the commercially available devices¹,² are side-on to the furnace and require significant precautions to prevent hot metal splashes and nozzle clogging.

The ideal solution would be a LIBS based system (or alternative in-situ measurement technique) which can be installed either from the top or the bottom of the furnace as indicated in the diagram above and provide the required measurements.

Key Success Criteria

The ideal technology will meet the following criteria:

  • Continuous measurement of temperature and metal bath composition
    • Up to 1650°C
    • Following elements: C, P, Si, S, N, H, and FeO
  • Capable of measuring the liquid metal components through the foamy slag layer at a distance of 2-3m
  • Ideally be a water cooled device
  • Low maintenance and high availability (6 months)
  • Each working device < $100,000
Possible Approaches

NineSigma's client is open to all technology readiness levels beyond conceptual and is open to development of potential systems from SMEs / academia.

Preferred Collaboration Types
Items to be Submitted

Proposals should contain the following, non-confidential information:

  • Executive summary
  • Status of IP and Freedom to Operate
  • Brief overview of organisation
