Needs Title

Technologies for converting fats, oils and free fatty acids C16-C18 into valuable products

Description

Neste, the largest producer of renewable fuels, is seeking technologies which can process fats, oils and free fatty acids C16-C18, mainly coming from waste streams, and turn them into valuable products such as block molecules for chemical industries or novel molecules for fuel applications.

Background

Neste is one of the leading companies when it comes to processing waste stream fats, oils and free fatty acids. Annually, Neste sources 2,6 Mton of fats and oils originating from plant- and animal-based streams (80% is waste based).

Today more than half of Neste's business is focused on renewable products such as road traffic fuels, and we are eager to expand to renewable chemicals and materials. At this moment the number of technologies that can generate high value products from this large waste stream is rather limited.

Therefore, Neste is looking for technologies, either existing or emerging, that can convert the waste-based fats, oils and C16-C18 fatty acids streams into valuable products.

Neste's strategic goal is to support our partners and ecosystems in fulfilling their sustainability agenda for climate change and circular economy. For this reason, Neste is:

  • Open to collaborations, joint projects to research into or further developing the solution
  • Open to collaborations where Neste offers the facilities to scale up the technology
  • Highly interested in an exclusive licensing agreement or even a technology acquisition
Key success Criteria
  • The proposed technology converts waste-based fats, oils or C16-C18 fatty acids streams into a potentially valuable product.
  • The product is likely to have a market value
  • The current TRL level of the technology must be 4 or higher

After further development, the proposed technology will be:

  •  Scalable and material efficient (high conversion, low mass loss)
  • Leading to product molecules with a renewable content >90%
Possible Approaches

Neste is open to all approaches with special focus in incubating new growth territories:

  • Technologies producing building block molecules for chemical industries (diols, diacids, olefins, etc.).
  • Technologies producing novel molecules to fuel applications
  • Technologies utilizing biological and chemical catalysis, or thermal conversions

Emerging technologies not yet at commercial scale

Approaches not of Interest
  • Technologies that produce or utilize toxic chemicals
  • Food applications
Items to be submitted

To submit your idea or proposal, please use the Respond button on the right of this page. Please note that only non-confidential information can be accepted.
By submitting a response: you represent that the response does not contain and will not be deemed to contain any confidential information of any kind; and you acknowledge that Neste may, in our absolute discretion, select or reject a response.

Your response should be an executive summary of what you are proposing. It should include both technical information on what the technology will be capable of and how you believe it can be of use to Neste as a business. Information on the background of those involved in the project will also be required in your response to this need posting.

We suggest you include the following:

  • Describe the technology and the product it is producing
  • Show evidence that fundamentally supports your approach
  • How is the technology and produced product relevant to Neste and the market (specific or in general)
  • Level of maturity of the technology
  • Background information on the people involved in the proposal
  • How do you envision the collaboration with Neste?

Remember….. Don’t send anything that could be considered confidential at this point.
