Just Launched: the Circular Materials Challenge!

EMF Circular Materials Tile_FINAL.pngLove them or hate them, plastics are everywhere around us. Demand for them is expected to double in 20 years, however our plastics system is broken. Most of these items are used only once before being discarded, resulting in a polluted environment. If this does not change, there could be more plastic than fish in the ocean by 2050. Innovators, designers, entrepreneurs and scientists - this is your chance to keep plastics in the economy and out of the ocean!

With the Circular Materials Challenge, the Ellen MacArthur Foundation seeks ways to make all plastic packaging recyclable. About 13% of today's packaging is made of layers of different materials fused together. Although this multi-layer construction aids in the freshness of food, it makes the packaging difficult to recycle. The Circular Materials Challenge invites innovators to find alternative materials that could be recycled or composted, rather than thrown away. Let's create a plastics system that works! Help build a circular economy for plastics that eliminate packaging waste - all while earning a monetary award to support your continued research and discovery.
