Situation: The client was concerned about disruptive technologies
in the alternative powertrain area that could potentially eliminate a significant
part of their business. The company wanted to align their expertise with new technologies
emerging globally.
Response: The NineSigma Intelligence Team was engaged to identify
and evaluate key technologies, industry and academic players and intellectual property
issues for open innovation. NineSigma identified technical areas to fit client expertise
in electronics and actuators with emerging technologies for in-wheel drive systems.
Impact: The externally-focused project helped the client understand
the complete technology landscape for their area of interest. The technology map
allowed the company to begin identifying potential impact to their existing core
business, but to also assess the significant opportunity emerging to use existing
core capabilities to enable the new disruptive technologies.
